SCHOOL POLICY

Please read the school policy carefully before proceeding with the application.

ARTICLE 1: POLICY ON ADMISSION

Age

    1. Attendance at a school during school hours shall be compulsory for all pupils/students from the first day of school of the year.

    2. Age is a core factor for coping; children should not be placed in classes above their age.

    3. The statistical age per grade is as follows:

Placement of pupils:

    1. A pupil already registered who is repeating the year will be placed first.

    2. Classes will be filled sequentially after the students have been assessed by the school. Our optimum number in a class is 15.

    3. The school reserves the right to decide on the appropriate number of students per classroom.

Testing:

  1. Pupils transferring from other schools will be required to undergo an assessment for correct placement.

  2. Pupils from foreign countries will be assessed and placed in age-appropriate grades unless the results prove otherwise.

The enrollment procedure:

  1. Parent inquiries about the school should be directed to the school administrative office.

  2. Parents should call the admissions officer to check for space availability or visit the school.

  3. Registration forms are purchased, and all relevant policy documents are attached to the registration form. Forms should be filled out correctly and submitted with the required documents before the child is admitted.

  4. The admissions officer arranges a date with the school head to assess the pupil.

  5. The pupil writes the relevant entrance test. Parents should find out the test results to know the appropriate class for their child.

  6. Once the financial check is approved, parents are given a letter of acceptance on the condition that their deposit has been paid. Students are admitted into the class.

ARTICLE 2: ISLAMIC IDENTITY POLICY

Wholesome Start is an Islamic faith-based school guided by the principles of the Qur'an and Sunnah. We expect all staff and students to conduct themselves following the teachings of Islam, encompassing both Ibadat (worship) and Mua’malat (everyday activities).

ARTICLE 3: ATTENDANCE POLICY

Wholesome Start Home School expects all students to maintain good attendance and punctuality. Regular attendance and active participation in school activities are crucial for students' academic and personal growth.

Definitions

  • Attendance: Student presence in school during scheduled hours.

  • Punctuality: Arrive on time for classes, prayers, and other school activities.

  • Absence: Failure to attend school or a scheduled class/activity.

  • Tardiness: Late arrival to school, classes, or activities.

Policy

  1. Regular Attendance and Punctuality

    • Students must attend school regularly and arrive on time for all classes and activities.

  2. Notification of Absence or Tardiness

    • Parents/guardians must notify the school in writing (email or note) of any absence or tardiness, providing a valid reason.

  3. Handling Excessive Absences or Tardiness

    • Students with excessive absences (more than 3 days per month) or tardiness will receive a warning and parental contact.

    • Repeated instances may lead to detention, counseling, or further disciplinary actions.

  4. Makeup Work

    • Makeup work will be allowed for valid absences, but late work may incur penalties.

  5. Attendance Records

    • Attendance records will be maintained and monitored regularly.

  6. Incentives for Perfect Attendance

    • Perfect attendance will be incentivized with rewards and recognition.

Procedures

  1. Notification by Parents/Guardians

    • Parents/guardians must notify the school by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the absence.

  2. Written Explanation of Absence

    • Students must provide a written note or email from parents/guardians explaining the absence.

  3. Follow-up on Unexplained Absences or Tardiness

    • The school will contact parents/guardians for unexplained absences or tardiness.

  4. Reporting Late Arrival

    • Students arriving late must report to the office for a tardy slip before joining class.

Consequences

  1. First Instance

    • Warning and parental contact.

  2. Second Instance

    • Detention and counseling.

  3. Third Instance

    • Further disciplinary actions (e.g., suspension).

Incentives

  1. Perfect Attendance

    • Reward and recognition for students with perfect attendance.

  2. Good Attendance

    • Special privileges or incentives for students with good attendance records.

ARTICLE 4: APPEARANCE

Students will appear in the appropriate uniforms daily.

  1. Mondays and Wednesdays: School uniform.

  2. Tuesdays and Thursdays: School sportswear.

  3. Fridays: Casual/traditional clothes. Students are to avoid wearing the school uniform/sportswear on Fridays.

  4. Exceptions are given to pupils and students who are yet to collect their uniforms and those in the hostel who are expected to be in their hostel ware.

ARTICLE 5: ASSEMBLY

  1. Assembly holds daily, between 7:30 am - 8:00 am.

  2. The assembly is a compulsory part of the child’s day. Missing it can cause a disconnect for the child. Pivotal activities such as character modeling, public speaking, and social interaction programs are conducted during assembly.

  3. Late coming to the school assembly and missing it daily is unacceptable.

ARTICLE 6: ACADEMIC STRUCTURE

  1. We use a blend of the Early Year Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the Montessori approach for teaching in the early years.

  2. We blend Montessori and the Nigerian curriculum in the upper classes.

  3. The assessment and reporting schedule will be clearly outlined, detailing when and how parents will receive updates on their child's progress.

ARTICLE 7: CLASSROOM STRUCTURE

  1. Classes are anchored, by professionals.

  2. The classroom is arranged to aid student’s interaction with learning resources.

  3. We use comfortable furniture which minimizes hazards.

  4. We ensure that classrooms are well-ventilated.

  5. Classrooms are well-decorated with instructional materials to stimulate learning.

  6. Knowledge impartation is a collaborative process between the school and parents.

ARTICLE 8: HOMEWORK

Wholesome Start Home School believes homework is essential to the learning process. Homework helps students reinforce their understanding of concepts learned in class, develop good study habits, and prepare for assessments.

Purpose of Homework:

  1. Reinforce understanding of concepts learned in class.

  2. Develop good study habits and time management skills.

  3. Prepare students for assessments and evaluations.

  4. Encourage active learning and critical thinking.

  5. Foster a sense of responsibility and accountability.

Types of Homework:

  1. Daily homework: assigned daily to reinforce understanding of concepts learned in class.

  2. Project-based homework: assigned periodically to encourage critical thinking and research skills.

  3. Long-term homework: assigned to prepare students for assessments and evaluations.

Expectations:

  1. Students are expected to complete all assigned homework on time.

  2. Students are expected to ask for help if they are struggling with homework.

  3. Parents/guardians are expected, to support and encourage their child's homework habits.

  4. Teachers are expected to provide clear instructions and feedback on homework.

Consequences of Not Completing Homework:

  1. Verbal warning and reminder of expectations.

  2. Extra homework workload will be given.

  3. Detention or loss of privileges.

  4. Parental contact and involvement.

  5. Counseling or mentoring.

 

Homework Guidelines:

  1. Homework will be assigned daily and will not exceed 60 minutes per night with the exceptions for SSS.

  2. Homework will be posted on the school's online platform.

  3. Students are expected to use their planners to keep track of homework   assignments.

  4. Parents/guardians can contact administerators if they have questions or concerns about homework.

ARTICLE 9: BULLYING

Definition of Bullying:

  • Bullying is behavior by an individual or a group, usually repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual either physically or emotionally.

  • Bullying can include name-calling, taunting, mocking, making offensive comments, kicking, hitting, taking belongings, producing offensive graffiti, gossiping, excluding people from groups, and spreading hurtful and untruthful rumors. This includes inappropriate and harmful behaviors expressed via digital devices (cyberbullying).

Forms of Bullying covered by this Policy:

  1. Bullying related to race, religion, or culture.

  2. Bullying related to Special Educational Needs or Disability.

  3. Bullying related to appearance or physical/mental health conditions.

  4. Sexual bullying of any kind.

  5. Bullying via technology (cyberbullying).

Preventing, Identifying, and Responding to Bullying:

Dealing with Incidents:

  1. If bullying is suspected or reported, the incident will be dealt with immediately by the member of staff who has been approached.

  2. A clear and precise account of the incident will be recorded and given to the head of the school or designated lead.

  3. The headteacher/designated lead will interview all concerned and record the incident.

  4. Teachers will be kept informed.

  5. When responding to cyberbullying, the school will take all available steps to identify the bully, including looking at the school systems and interviewing possible witnesses.

  6. Where the bullying occurs outside the school premises, the school will ensure that the concern is investigated and appropriate action is taken according to the school’s behavior and discipline policy.

  7. Parents/caregivers will be kept informed.

  8. Sanctions will be per the school’s behavior/discipline policy such as; official warnings, detentions, removal of privileges, fixed-term, and permanent expulsion.

  9. If necessary, the police or other local services will be consulted.

Supporting Pupils:

  1. Pupils who have been bullied will be supported by discussing what happened, informing parents/caregivers, providing appropriate education and support, and monitoring to ensure the incident does not reoccur.

Involvement of Pupils:

  1. Regularly canvas children and young people’s views on the extent and nature of bullying.

  2. Ensure all pupils know how to express worries and anxieties about bullying.

  3. Ensure all students know the range of sanctions that may be applied against those engaging in bullying.

  4. Involve pupils in anti-bullying campaigns in schools and embed messages in the wider school curriculum.

  5. Publicize the details of helplines and websites.

  6. Offer support to pupils who have been bullied and those who are bullying to address the problems they have.

 

ARTICLE 10: BEHAVIOUR AND DISCIPLINE POLICY

Wholesome Start Home School expects all students to exhibit good behavior, and adhere to Islamic values and principles. This policy outlines the expectations for student behavior, the procedures for managing challenging behavior, and the consequences of misbehavior.

Expected Behaviours

  1. Respect for Teachers, Staff, and Peers: Students should respect all members, of the school community.

  2. Respect for School Property and Resources: Students should care for and use school property responsibly.

  3. Active Participation in Classes and Activities: Students are expected to engage actively in their learning and school activities.

  4. Kindness, Empathy, and Inclusivity: Students should be kind, empathetic, and inclusive towards others.

  5. Truthfulness, Honesty, and Integrity: Students should always be honest and act, with integrity.

  6. Responsibility for One's Actions and Belongings: Students should take responsibility for their actions and belongings.

  7. Adherence to School Rules and Policies: Students must follow all the school rules and policies.

Misbehaviours

  1. Disrespect towards Teachers, Staff, or Peers: Disrespect is unacceptable.

  2. Damage to School Property or Resources: Students must not damage or misuse school property.

  3. Disruption of Classes or Activities: Students should avoid disrupting the learning environment.

  4. Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation: Bullying in any form is prohibited.

  5. Dishonesty, Lying, or Cheating: Integrity is expected at all times.

  6. Insubordination or Refusal to Follow Rules: Students must comply with instructions from school authorities.

  7. Use of Technology for Non-Academic Purposes: Technology should be used appropriately and primarily for academic purposes.

Consequences for Misbehaviour

  1. Verbal Warning and Reminder of Expected Behaviour: The first step in addressing misbehavior shall be a verbal warning.

  2. Detention or Loss of Privileges: Continued misbehavior may result in detention or loss of certain privileges.

  3. Parental Contact and Involvement: Parents will be informed and involved if misbehavior persists.

  4. Counseling or Mentoring: Students may receive counseling or mentoring to address behavioral issues.

  5. Suspension or Expulsion (in Extreme Cases): In severe cases, suspension or expulsion may be necessary.

Procedures for Dealing with Challenging Behaviour

  1. Verbal Reprimand: The pupil will be allowed to discuss the situation and encouraged to modify their behavior.

  2. Isolation for Disruptive Behaviour: Disruptive behavior in class may result in a child being isolated from their peers and seated near the teacher.

  3. Referral to the Principal: Continued disruptive behavior may result in the child being sent to the Principal and given age-appropriate punishment.

  4. Parental Involvement: Parents will be informed if disruptive behavior persists.

  5. Behavior IEP (Individualized Educational Program): If there is no improvement, the pupil may be placed on a behavior IEP, and challenging behavior will be documented.

  6. Expulsion: As a last resort, if all other steps have been taken and the student continues to break the school rules, they will face the disciplinary committee, and expulsion may be decided.

Serious Breaches of Discipline

  1. Bullying: Any form of bullying is a serious offense.

  2. Assault on a Pupil with Intent to Cause Injury: Physical violence is strictly prohibited.

  3. Assault on a Member of Staff: Violence towards staff will not be tolerated.

  4. Possession of Illegal Drugs: The possession or use of illegal drugs is prohibited.

  5. Possession of Dangerous Weapons: Students must not bring dangerous weapons to school.

  6. Persistent Intentional Disruption of Class: Ongoing disruptive behavior will be addressed seriously.

  7. Vulgar, Abusive, and Inappropriate Language: Inappropriate language is not acceptable.

Alternatively, the school will use restorative practices to promote reconciliation and understanding between affected parties.

Positive Behaviour Support

  1. Verbal Praise and Recognition: Positive behavior will be acknowledged and praised.

  2. Rewards and Incentives: Good behavior will be encouraged through rewards and incentives.

  3. Public Acknowledgment and Celebration: Students exhibiting positive behavior will be publicly acknowledged.

  4. Special Privileges or Responsibilities: Positive behavior may result in special privileges or responsibilities.

  5. Parental Involvement for Positive Behaviour: Parents will be informed and involved in recognizing and reinforcing positive behavior.

 ARTICLE 11: INSPECTION

  1. The school will undergo periodic inspections by relevant educational authorities to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.

  2. The school will maintain a high standard of education and safety for all students.

  3. Inspections will assess the quality of teaching, the learning environment, and student welfare.

 ARTICLE 12: SUPERVISION

  1. The school will ensure adequate supervision of students during school hours, including breaks and extracurricular activities.

  2. The ratio of adults to children for supervision during different school activities will be specified for safety.

  3. Staff members will be assigned specific supervision duties to monitor student behavior and ensure a safe environment.

 ARTICLE 13: HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENT (H.S.E)

  1. The school is committed to providing a healthy, safe environment, for students, staff, and visitors.

  2. Health and safety policies and procedures will be regularly reviewed and updated.

  3. Students will be educated on health and safety practices, including hygiene and first aid.

  4. The school will promote environmental sustainability; encouraging recycling and responsible use of resources within the school.

ARTICLE 14: PARENTS AND TEACHERS FORUM

  1. The school will organize regular forums enabling communication and collaboration between parents and teachers.

  2. The forum will allow parents to discuss their concerns, ask questions, and provide feedback on school policies and practices.

  3. Teachers will share updates on student progress, upcoming events, and other important information.

 ARTICLE 15: GRADUATION

  1. Graduation ceremonies will be held at the end of the academic year to celebrate the student's achievements.

  2. Parents, staff, and students will be invited to attend the graduation ceremony.

  3. Graduating students will receive certificates of achievement and recognition for their hard work and dedication.

 ARTICLE 16: TEACHERS

  1. The school will employ qualified and experienced teachers to deliver high-quality education to students.

  2. Teachers will undergo regular professional development to stay updated with the latest teaching methods and educational practices.

  3. Teachers are to maintain a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.

 

 ARTICLE 17: BUS SERVICE

  1. The school will provide a bus service for students who require transportation to and from school.

  2. The bus service will operate on a scheduled route, with designated pick-up and drop-off points.

  3. Parents should register their children for the bus service and pay any associated fees.

 ARTICLE 18: COMMUNICATION

  1. The school will maintain open lines of communication with parents, providing regular updates on student progress and school events.

  2. Parents will be encouraged to communicate with teachers and staff regarding any concerns or questions.

  3. The school will use various communication channels, including newsletters, emails, and parent-teacher meetings to keep the parents informed.

 ARTICLE 19: FIELD TRIPS AND EXCURSIONS

  1. The school will organize field trips and excursions to enhance the depth of learning experiences.

  2. Parents need to give written consent, for their children to participate in any field trip or excursion.

  3. The school will ensure that all trips are adequately supervised and that safety measures are in place.

 ARTICLE 20: LIBRARY AND MEDIA CENTER

  1. The school will provide a well-stocked library and media center for students to support their learning and research needs.

  2. Students will be encouraged to use the library resources for their academic work and personal development.

  3. The library will be managed by a qualified librarian who will assist students in finding and using resources.

 ARTICLE 21: TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

  1. The school will integrate technology into the curriculum to enhance teaching and learning.

  2. Students will be taught how to use technology responsibly and effectively.

  3. The school will allow access to computers, tablets, and other digital devices for educational purposes.

 ARTICLE 22: COUNSELING AND SUPPORT SERVICES

  1. The school will provide counseling and support services to students, who require academic, emotional, or social assistance.

  2. A qualified counselor will be available to meet with students and provide guidance and support.

  3. Parents will be informed if their child is receiving counseling services.

 ARTICLE 23: EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

  1. Fire Drills and Evacuations

    1. Fire drills will be conducted regularly to ensure all students and staff are familiar with evacuation procedures.

    2. Students must follow the instructions of teachers and staff during drills and evacuations.

  2. Medical Emergencies

    1. In the case of medical emergencies, the school will provide first aid and contact emergency services if necessary.

    2. Parents will be notified immediately if their child is involved in a medical emergency.

  3. Lockdown Procedures

    1. The school will conduct lockdown drills to prepare for potential security threats.

    2. Students must follow staff instructions and remain in designated safe areas during a lockdown.

 

 ARTICLE 24: FOOD AND NUTRITION

  1. School Meals

    1. The school will provide nutritious meals and snacks for students.

    2. Parents are to inform the school of dietary restrictions or allergies that their children may have.

  2. Packed Lunches

    1. Students bringing packed lunches are encouraged to include healthy options.

    2. Junk food and sugary drinks are discouraged in packed lunches.

 ARTICLE 25: DATA PROTECTION AND PRIVACY

  1. Student Records

    1. The school will maintain accurate and secure records of student information.

    2. Parents have the right to access their child’s records upon request.

 ARTICLE 27: PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
